The chief of naval staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed receives two 035G class submarines of People’s Republican Army’s Rear Admiral Liu Zizhu at Dalian in China.

The Chinese government has handed over two submarines to Bangladesh on Monday.

Bangladesh Navy chief Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed received the two submarines at Dalian Shipyard in China.

The ceremony organised in Dalian in North-East China was attended on behalf of People’s Liberation Army’s Navy Rear Admiral Liu Zizhu and a number of high ranking Chinese military and civil dignitaries.

Rear Admiral Liu Zizhu said that PLA Navy and Bangladesh Navy are trusted partners and the submarines transfer will strengthen and deepen the friendship between the two countries significantly.

The two 035G class submarines (aka Ming class) have been procured by the Navy under a government to government contact of 2013.

Both submarines went through extensive refit and modernisation. Bangladesh Navy and PLA Navy officers jointly conducted the trials and were happy with the outcome.

Bangladeshi submarine crews have also run the submarines. The submarines have been delivered exactly on time.

The newly acquired two submarines by Bangladesh Navy are conventional diesel electric submarines. These are 76m long and 7.6m wide. Their main weapons against ships and submarines are torpedoes and mines. These submarines can perform a number of other special tasks as well. The two submarines are expected to be commissioned early next year under the name of BNS Nobojatra and BNS Joyjatra.
