Chased by cops, ‘Jamaat man’ falls to death from city high rise

Dhaka, Mar 8 (UNB) – A suspected Jamaat man died as he fell from a high rise after being chased by police in the city’s Purana Paltan area on Friday afternoon.
The identity of the deceased, aged around 30, could not be known yet.Meanwhile, the law enforcers arrested around 90 suspected Jamaat-Shibir men from different places around the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Witnesses said a group of Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession from Paltan Mosque after Juma prayers. They also exploded some crude bombs.

Police chased the Jamaat-Shibir men and opened fire on them to disperse them. Being chased, around 60 activists took shelter in a 12-storey building at 29/1 Purana Paltan.

Police arrested 35 activists from the high rise where former Jamaat ward commissioner Khandaker Abdur Rab owns a flat and resides in it.

In the meantime, the unidentified young man fell from the rooftop of the building at about 2:30 pm, killing him on the spot.

Police were searching the building till filing of this report at about 3:40 pm.

Earlier, police arrested 30 people suspecting them as Jamaat-Shibir activists from Dainik Bangla crossing when they got down from a bus before Juma prayers.

Besides, the law enforcers detained another 19 people from the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram while four others from its South Gate also before Juma prayers.

Police also dispersed a group of Jamaat-Shibir men when they tried to bring out a procession from Poolpar at Purana Paltan after Juma prayers.
