Chaos and Harmony in Old Dhaka

By JAKE NAUGHTON

Munem Wasif was born in the city of Comilla, Bangladesh, in 1983 and has been photographing in Old Dhaka for more than 10 years. His new book, “Belongings,” explores the rhythms of daily life in Old Dhaka, the faded historic center of Bangladesh’s capital. The book, featuring Mr. Wasif’s photographs and text as well as a preface by Christian Caujolle, is published by Éditions Clémentine de la Féronnière and will be released this month.

Ms. Wasif’s work has been recognized with the Young Reporter Award at the Visa Pour l’Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France, and he was selected for the Joop Swart Masterclass in 2007. He is represented by Agence VU.

In an audio slide show, Mr. Wasif expands on his street photographs from the old city, as distinct from the new city — which, though more spacious, feels more “claustrophobic, because you don’t feel you belong here.”
