CEC returns home

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad returned home on Monday morning after his 42 days of vacationing in the USA.

The CEC along with his wife arrived at 4:50am by a Turkish flight, CEC’s personal secretary Mazharul Islam told UNB.

Rakibuddin went to the USA on March 3 amid the countrywide staggered upazila elections that drew huge criticisms from various quarters.

In absence of the CEC, Election Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mobarak performed his duties.

The CEC is most likely to join his office at the EC secretariat on Tuesday, he said.

During his stay there, he along with EC acting secretary Sirajul Islam met World Bank officials concerned at its headquarters in Washington and discussed the Election Commission’s proposed project of smart national identity cards as the global lender is a donour agency of the commission, EC Secretariat sources said.

The last three phases of the upazila elections were held amid massive violence and irregularities in absence of the CEC.
