Mediation can reduce case backlog and restore peace in the society effectively, he said while inaugurating ‘Mediation Awareness Workshop’ jointly organised by the Supreme Court and UNDP at the Supreme Court auditorium in the morning.

The chief justice said, “Sincere efforts are being made at all level to enhance the output, but in spite of all-out endeavours we are unable to reduce the huge backlog of cases.”

“Mediation will substantially reduce our case backlog, further strengthen social peace and fraternity and allow our courts to concentrate on cases involving complicated legal issues”.

Justice Muzammel also said it is an erroneous concept that the settlement of cases through mediation will impact negatively on the legal profession.

“It has been proved that quick disposal of cases through mediation encourages people to bring their dispute to court consequently increasing the number of new cases”, he continued.

He said mediation open a new horizon for the legal profession encouraging many advocate to become professional mediator.

Mediation offers a structure to increase and facilitate direct negotiation between the parties of a dispute without the intervention of a third party, the chief justice added.

Supreme Court sources said around 27 lakh cases are pending with the court across the country including the Appellate Division and High Court.
