Bus driver gets life in Tareque, Mishuk killing case

A Manikganj court on Wednesday handed down life-term imprisonment to the bus driver in a case over road accident that killed filmmaker Tareque Masud, journalist Ashfaque Munier Mishuk and three others in 2011.

Additional district and session judge Al Mahmud Faijul Kabir announced the verdict in presence of the convict, Md Jamir Hossain, 50, son of late Abdur Rahim Biswas of Chuadanga.

The judge on Sunday set today for delivering the verdict after hearing closing statements of both the sides.

The court testified 24 witnesses from state while two from the defence.

Filmmaker Tareque Masud, media personality Ashfaque Munier Mishuk, popularly known as Mishuk Munier, their film production crews – Wasim and Jamal – and microbus driver, Mostafizur Rahman, died in a fatal road crash on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Manikganj on August 13, 2011.

Tareque’s wife Catherine Masud, painter Dhali Al Mamun, his wife Dilara Zaman Jolly, and film production staff Saidul Islam were seriously injured in the accident.

A Chuadanga-bound bus originating from Dhaka collided head-on with the microbus all the film crews were riding around 12:15pm.

The sub-inspector of Ghior police, Md Lutfar Rahman, lodged a case with the police, on August 13 against the bus driver, Jamir Hossain, under sections 279, 338(Ka), 304 and 427, respectively.

Jamir was arrested at his relative’s house at Chowgachha village under Gangni upazila in Meherpur by the joint operation of Dhaka and Manikganj detective police on August 15, two days after filing of the case.

The investigating officer of the case and officer-in-charge of Ghior police, inspector Ashraf-Ul-Islam, said he submitted charge sheet against the accused driver before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on March 22, in 2012.
