‘Bullet-hit newborn stable’

The newborn girl, who was hit by bullet while still inside her mother’s womb, is now in a stable condition, said the doctor in charge.

Doctor of the paediatric surgery department of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Kaniz Hasina confirmed this news to Prothom Alo on Tuesday.

“The baby is now in a stable condition. The bullet pierced through her chest and exited through her back, but damaged no vital organs fortunately,” said the doctor.

The baby also received injuries in her hands, throat, and eyes, and the eye injury is raising concerns among the doctors, she added.

The unborn sustained bullet hit when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during an attack by a Magura Chhatra League faction on the extended family of another rival faction at the Doarpar Karigorpara area in Magura on 23 July, which left one killed and another person injured.

The pregnant mother was rushed to Magura Sadar hospital, where she gave birth to the baby via C-section. The baby was later transferred to the Paediatric Surgery department at DMCH on Sunday night after her condition deteriorated.

The mother of the child is undergoing treatment at the Magura Sadar Hospital.

The other victim of the incident Momin Bhuiya, 65, succumbed to his injuries on Friday night.

The deceased’s son Rubel bhuiya filed a case with the Sadar police station against the district unit BCL president Sen Shuman as the main accused and 16 others.
