Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) on Sunday staged demonstrations protesting the government’s move to increase the power tariff and award tender of the offshore gas blocks to the US and Indian companies.

The party brought out a procession and held a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city in the afternoon.

BSD general secretary Comrade Khalequzzaman, central committee members Bazlur Rashid Firoze and Zahedul Haque Milu, among others, addressed the rally.

Speaking on the occasion, Khalequzzaman said, “The government is now trying to hike the power prices again by 15 percent even after the grand alliance government increased the tariffs on six occasions during its previous tenure.”

The BSD leader alleged that the government cut down the subsidy provided to the power sector and increase the power tariff following recommendations of the World Bank and IMF.

Ignoring the national interest, lease agreements are now being signed with Indian ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) and Oil India Ltd (OIL) to award offshore gas blocks like the agreements were signed with Chevron, ConocoPhillips and other multinational companies in the past, he said.
