Broom-march against AL candidate in Kachua

Star Online Report

A group of women today marched with brooms against a candidate of the Awami League in Kachua Upazila, Chandpur, ahead of the general election.

Our local correspondent reports, they also burned an effigy of Md Golam Hossain, the nominee, who is a former chairman of National Board of Revenue.

Ruling Awami League has permitted two candidates to file nomination for Chandpur-1 constituency, which is constituted with the Kachua Upazila.

The other candidate of Awami League in this constituency is Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, a running lawmaker and former home minister of the previous Awami League government.

Protesting women said, Golam Hossain has no connection with the party activities in Kachua. And hence, they will not accept anyone except MP Alamgir.

Thus far, both nominated candidates from Awami League have submitted their nomination to the returning officer. Ultimately, one will have to withdraw from wielding the ‘boat’ symbol.

WHEN IS THE ELECTION?

Election Commission has revised polls schedule, deferring the 11th general election by a week to December 30 – a decision taken on November 12.

The authorities have fixed November 28 as the deadline for filing nomination papers, December 2 for scrutiny and December 9 as the last date of withdrawal.

The move came following demands from several opposition political parties.
