Broadcast policy gazette out

The Information Ministry released the gazette on Thursday afternoon to put the policy into effect, Joint Secretary (broadcast) Md Abul Hasan told bdnews24.com.

The Cabinet on Monday approved the National Broadcast Policy 2014 which prohibits television and radio from broadcasting any news that may ‘taint the image of the country’s law keepers and the army’.

It also directs television talk-shows not to air ‘false and confusing’ comments.

The Information Ministry will be in charge of implementing the new set of rules until an independent broadcast commission is formed within three to four months.

Media persons have urged the ministry to quickly transfer the authority to the independent body.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said the policy would be turned into an act before the forming of a broadcast commission.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) denounced the government move saying it was a ploy to ‘cage’ Bangladesh’s media under the guise of ‘promoting responsibility and accountability’.
