Bring proposal as per rules of procedure: Tofail to oppn

Khaleda makes mistake in her proposal, he says

Senior Treasury Bench member Tofail Ahmed on Wednesday urged the opposition to come up with their interim-government proposal as per the rules of procedure for having discussions on how the polls will be held.

He made the request when BNP senior MP Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar placed the proposal of polls-time government formula on behalf of opposition MPs and opposition leader Khaleda Zia standing on a point of order.

Tofail also said the opposition leader and BNP chairperson Khaleda made a ‘mistake’ while placing her proposal on a polls-time government.

“She has made a mistake. There were 18 advisers, not 20 advisers. Four of them have passed away, while two are unwilling take the responsibility, four are sick, one is adviser to the opposition leader. So, even 10 people are not left there to be picked as advisers,” he said.

Tofail Ahmed also citied quotes of Khaleda Zia made against the 19196 caretaker government accusing the government of rigging votes, which were published in the daily Dinkal and other newspapers.

Quoting the country’s eminent constitutional experts, he said Khaleda’s proposal was ‘unconstitutional.’ Tofail also said the Prime Minister made it clear that she will not go beyond the Constitution.

In reply, Sircar took the floor again and said their proposal was made for the Prime Minister’s consideration and apparently expressed dissatisfaction as Tofail talked about the issue.

“Today, you’re making contradictory remarks. Yes. You can. But the fact remains that it was your (AL’s) proposal (caretaker government).

Later, MK Anwar said if they can reach a consensus on Chief Adviser, it can be decided how the advisers will be chosen.

Senior treasury bench member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim said MK Anwar did not tell the right thing and Awami League did not amend the Constitution rather it was forced to do that.

Referring to Ziaur Rahman’ emergence to power, he said, “You (BNP) don’t like to obey the Constitution as you were born in Cantonment.”

Sheikh Selim also said they cannot go beyond the Constitution and the election will be held as per the Constitution. “Don’t think that Sheikh Hasina has turned weak.”

Later, Suranjit Sengupta took part in the debate and said he did not expect such remark from MK Anwar. “When a proposal or statement comes that becomes property of the House…We didn’t expect such illogical remark from him.”

He said what the BNP is saying is against the spirit of the Constitution. “Let’s come to PM’s proposal. There’s a scope for discussion on PM’s proposal. There’s no scope to reach a consensus on your (BNP) proposal.”

Suranjit urged the opposition to come to the discussion table for an all-party polls-time government.
