BNP did not backtrack from its earlier stance relating to the relation with India, party Standing Committee Member Tariqul Islam said on Tuesday.

“BNP did not change its stance (centering relations with India) and the relation remains as it was earlier,” Tariqul, a former minister and MP, said at a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

The press conference was organised to express the party’s reaction following the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s recent visit to India.

Tariqul repeatedly avoided to answer directly as journalists asked him volley of questions about the much-talked about BNP’s changed anti-India stance.

He however replied: “Our relationship with India will be on the basis of equal dignity and sovereignty.”

He also denied that Khaleda Zia said anything on transit while visiting India. “Rather, she held talks about greater regional connectivity,” said Tariqul.
