The BNP has announced to stage a countrywide protest programme on Sunday in protest against the bar on the party members to hold a civil gathering on Thursday.

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters on Friday morning.

He said: “BNP believes that the police barred the party men from holding the civil gathering illegally and unconstitutionally. We have announced the programme protesting the bar on party chairperson Khaleda Zia to hold the rally.”

Rizvi further said the government has given license to the police to repress the opposition party men.

The BNP leader harshly criticised the government over filing false cases against the senior leaders of the party, including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

“Filing false case and submission of charge sheet against the senior leaders of the party is a new frontline of the government to repress the opposition party,” he alleged.

On Thursday, police barred the party from holding a rally at Institution of Engineers in the capital. The rally was organised in protest against the recent abduction and killing incidents.

In the programme, Khaleda Zia was expected to deliver a speech and people from different sections of life were also expected to attend.

Later, failing to stage the gathering, Khaleda Zia called a press meet at her Gulshan party office in the evening and demanded the formation of a credible and neutral probe committee headed by a former chief justice to unearth the mystery of all the incidents of extra-judicial killings and abductions.
