BNP wants good relations with India, Khaleda tells Pankaj

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia told Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran that her party wants to maintain good relations with India based on equal respect and mutual benefits.

BNP vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury said this on Thursday night after a meeting between party chairperson Khaleda Zia and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran.

The hour-long meeting started at Khaleda’s Gulshan political office around 8:15pm.

“The High Commissioner (Indian) told BNP chairperson that the people of Bangladesh will take the decision what type of government they want. His government (India) wants to work with the government of Bangladeshi people’s expectation,” Mobin said.

He further said, “The BNP chairperson in reply said BNP wants good relations with all countries but that should be based on equal respects and mutual benefits and her party will continue good relations with India in the future.”

However, Pankaj Saran did talk to the media after the meeting.

Mobin said the meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere and Khaleda Zia requested the high commissioner to convey her greetings to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The Indian envoy met Khaleda for the first time after the January 5 parliamentary elections which the BNP-led 18-party alliance boycotted demanding elections under a non-partisan interim administration.

Three other advisers to the BNP chairperson Reaz Rahman, Osman Farruk and Sabihuddin Ahmed were present at the meeting.
