DHAKA: BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed said his party will sit across the table with the government instantly if it makes announcement to hold of the next general election under a non-party caretaker government (CG) oversight. He was addressing a discussion on ‘freedom of press, humanity and Savar tragedy’ organised by Agamir Bangladesh at the National Press Club on Monday afternoon.

“We will refrain from all kinds of anti-government campaign and we will sit with the government instantly for dialogue if it makes a clear announcement to hold the next general election under the CG management,” he said.

Moudud Ahmed said the country’s heard-earn democracy will be killing if the next general election is held under a party government oversight and the ruling Awami League will be thrown by the people forever.

Referring to the Rana arrest, he said the government has been forced to nab Sohel Rana, owner of the Rana Plaza, in the face public demand.

“Rana’s capital punishment has to be ensured and the ruling party local lawmaker Tauhid Jang Murad has also to be tried for extension of his all out support to Rana,” he made the plea.

He asked the government to shun the path of politics of vengeance for the sake of democratic practices.

Holding the government responsible for Savar tragedy, Moudud Ahmed said hundreds of people were killed and scores were injured in a building collapse incident due to the ruling party’s politics of vengeance.
