The BNP-led 18-Party Alliance will march in ‘black’ throughout the country on Friday with black flags to mark ‘one eleven’ of 2007 as a dark chapter in the history of Bangladesh.
An army-backed ‘caretaker government’ was formed this day in 2007 – often referred to as one of the major political turning points in the history of Bangladesh.

The rally is expected to begin from BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan late in the afternoon, and will march through several important roads.

BNP Standing Committee members, advisor to the Chairperson, Vice President and other central leaders are expected to attend the programme, according to BNP Metropolitan Committee member Abdus Salam.

BNP Joint General Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said his party was observing the ‘one eleven’ as a black day. “Activists will march with black flags in hands to show hatred and indignation towards the illegitimate Fakhruddin-Moeen Uddin government.”

Six years ago this day, a state of emergency was issued under then President Iajuddin Ahmed, putting apparently an end to the violence after the BNP regime in 2006.

The parliamentary election of Jan 22, 2007 was dismissed.

A new army-backed former Bangladesh Bank Governor Fakhruddin Ahmed-led ‘caretaker government’ was formed.

Democracy resumed two years later on Dec 29, 2008 under an Election Commission reformed during the Fakhruddin government.

Several frontline leaders and businessmen, including Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, were arrested over corruption charges during the regime.

However, the government was later forced to hold polls after allowing them to walk free. Awami League-led coalition assumed chair in 2008 elections.
