BNP threats to drag UN

BNP on Friday threatened to turn to the United Nations for probe into the recent police action against Hifazat-e-Islam if the government refuses a judicial probe, a senior party leader said Friday.

The party’s Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed said BNP will turn to the UN unless the government instituted a judicial commission into ‘recent killings’ while clearing the Hifazat supporters from Shapla Chattar.

He alleged many people were killed during the police drive.

“I will tell the government, that instead of concealing this incident, please form a neutral commission under a retired Chief Justice to probe the police high-handedness. If the government refuses, we will be forced to demand a probe by the United Nations.”

The police ousted the Hifazat-e-Islam supporters from Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar on May 5 in a tough action after the radicals refused to move out when their rally had ended.

Opposition claimed that ‘thousands’ were killed during the drive. The police rubbished such claims and said that no one was injured in that operation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the opposition were spreading ‘baseless and malicious rumours’ .

Home Minister MK Alamgir and police blamed the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami for the violence in Paltan, Bijoy Nagar and Gulistan during the Hifazat’s rally at Motijheel.

“On one side, the government says there was no casualty in the May 5 incident. But why then was the media not allowed there (Shapla Chattar) during the raid?”, Moudud said.

“Why the telecast of Diganta TV and Islamic TV was shut down?” Moudud asked.

“All these actions raise grave doubts ,” Moudud told the discussion programme arranged by Bangladesh Youth Forum at the National Press club.

Regarding the Prime Minister’s offer for talks in view of the political crisis in the country, Moudud said, “Today, the government has taken the country to a point where there is no atmosphere for dialogues.”

“They have pursued the politics of vengeance since they came to power.”

The BNP leader commented that the ruling party will have to regret some day for governing the country in such a manner.

“We were also in power. Even we made mistakes whichy we now regret. That is why I request the government to give up the wrong path. You cannot suppress the people with guns and bullets.”
