BNP smells digital rigging in polls

It urges govt to refrain from election machination

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Thursday alleged that the government is chalking out a plan for digital rigging through holding a unilateral election to cling to power.

“Over 50 percent people of the country are ready to cast their votes for BNP.  Realising it, the government is making a plan for digital rigging through holding lopsided polls keeping BNP out of the race,” he said.

Addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, Mosharraf warned the government of dire consequences if it dares to hold such an election ignoring country’s 90 percent people’s desire to hold it under a non-party caretaker government.

Zehad Smrity Parishad arranged the programme marking the 23rd death anniversary of Najiriddin Zehad who was killed during the anti-autocracy movement against then President HM Ershad in the 90s.

Mosharraf, also a former minister, further alleged government officials have already been asked to ensure the cast of at least 50 percent votes in the unilateral polls through digital rigging and mechanism.

Citing an ‘intelligence’ report, he said, “A government agency report says if the election is held under a party government, it won’t be possible to send ballot boxes to 24 districts, while it won’t be possible to bring back that from 20 districts. In the rest 20 districts, it won’t be possible to cast more than 10 percent votes.”

About Prothom Alo’s survey findings published on Thursday, Mosharraf said as per the report of the daily, which is not a pro-BNP newspaper, around 50.3 percent people are ready to vote for BNP and 90 percent people want the election to be held under a non-party caretaker government.

The BNP leader said democracy and the country’s independence are now at stake due to the government’s stubbornness. “They (AL) want to hold the polls by force under their own administration without dissolving parliament. They’re least bothered about the mass people’s demand.”

Mosharraf called on the government to forget about its plan to hold a one-sided election, or else, he warned BNP along with people will crush the ruling party’s blueprint.

The BNP leader urged the party leaders and activists to get ready for making any sacrifice in the days to come to force the government through a strong movement to arrange the election under a non-party government.

Chaired by Zehad Smrity Parishad president Amanullah Aman, the programme was addressed, among others, by former student leaders Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Fazlul Haque Milon, Khairul Kabir Khokan, Nazimuddin Alam and Habibul Islam Habib.
