Senior BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Saturday accused the government of frequently arresting and harassing its leaders and activists in a bid to suppress their movement.

“Assuming office through a voter-less election, the government is conspiring to destroy democracy. They’re arresting opposition leaders and activists in false cases to cling to power. The repressive acts won’t help suppress our movement,” he said.

Khan, also a BNP standing committee member, was addressing a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the Independence Day.

He said the current government has no mandate to rule the country as it came to power through stage-managed and lopsided polls. “They’re now holding office with the power of arms.”

Voicing deep concern over what he said slide in law and order, the BNP leader said, “An unbearable situation is prevailing across the country. No body is safe anywhere. Dead bodies are being found regularly. The opposition men are being harassed, tortured and made disappeared.”

Khan was also critical of the government for indicting BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman in two graft cases, saying it was part of the conspiracy against democracy.

He urged the party men, especially the youths, to play a vital role in the movement for restoring democracy, the rule of law and stability in the country.

Addressing the function, another BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah said the government has destabilised the law and order and destroyed democracy through the January 5 farcical elections.

Terming Awami league a fascist party, he said it is now trying to hang onto power resorting to repressive acts.
