BNP seeks permission for black-flag procession

The BNP-led 19-party alliance has sought permission from the government to bring out its scheduled black-flag procession on Wednesday, either from in front of its Nayapaltan central office or Suhrawardy Udyan.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Monday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they have applied to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for allocating them any of the two spots for the programme.

“People have no connection with parliament formed through a voter-less farcical elections. This parliament is going into session on Wednesday. Protesting it, the 19-party alliance will stage peaceful black-flag processions across the country on that day,” the BNP leader told reporters.

He hoped that the government will cooperate with them by giving permission for peacefully holding their scheduled black-flag procession. “We hope the government will help us exercise our democratic rights of expression different opinion.”

The BNP-led 18-party alliance turned into a 19-party platform as the Kazi Zafar Ahmed-led Jatiya Party joined it on Saturday.

It will be the first programme of the 19-party alliance.

Fakhrul said they have sent their planned route for their programme in the city to the DMP.

As per the plan, if the 19-party starts its procession from Nayapaltan it will end at Moghbazar through Kakrail, Shantinagar and Malibagh.

If they take out the procession from Suhrawardy Udyan, it will conclude at Moghbazar via Matsya Bhaban, Topkhana Road, Bijoy Nagar, Kakrail, Shantinagar and Malibagh.

Earlier in the day, a joint meeting of the party was held at its central office with Fakhrul in the chair about the preparation of the programme.

At the meeting, the BNP acting secretary general directed the party leaders to make the programme a success.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia announced the programme at a press conference here on January 15.
