The government tried to cover up the cyber heist of Bangladesh Bank money kept in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the BNP has alleged.

The BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi levelled this charge at a press conference on Monday.

“Why did the heist come to light a month after it had taken place? It proves that efforts were made to hush up the incident,” he said.

“We, on behalf of the BNP, demand immediate recovery of the stolen money and trial of those involved,” Rizvi said.

He referred to newspaper reports that quoted experts saying it was difficult to steal central bank funds without insider involvement.

Hackers had breached the Bangladesh Bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank and stole over $100 million early last month.

The incident came to light after a Philippine newspaper, Daily Inquirer, published a report on the theft.

The BNP leader asked about the bank’s CCTV camera footage of the day when the heist had taken place.

He criticised Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s ‘ignorance’ of the incident.

Referring to Tk 25 billion Hall-Mark scam, Rizvi said, “It’s natural that the government, which is busy to save thieves, will know nothing.”
