Opposition BNP on Sunday reassured Dr Muhammad Yunus that the party will always be there with him and Nobel prize-winning Grameen Bank.

“BNP will always remain beside Grameen Bank and its founder Dr Yunus as we support whatever Prof Yunus and the Bank have done for the country’s poor people,” BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury told reporters.

His remarks came after a two-member BNP delegation, including Shamsher Mobin, handed over a congratulatory letter of its chairperson Khaleda Zia to Dr Muhammad Yunus at Yunus Centre in Mirpur for receiving the US Congressional Gold Medal.

Mobin told the journalists that the contributions of the Bank to the development of rural people are rare in history. “BNP wishes continued success of the Nobel prize-wining organisation.”

In her letter, Khaleda, also leader of the opposition in parliament, described Yunus as a globally acclaimed person and greeted him for receiving the Congressional Gold Medal.

She also wished long life of the Grameen Bank founder.

The delegation members that also included Dr Osman Farroque presented a bouquet to Yunus on behalf of Khaleda Zia.

The BNP delegation also had talks with Dr Yunus for a while.

Talking to the journalists, Yunus said, “I’ve received the Congressional Award on behalf of the country and its people. It’s not my lone achievement, but the country’s all people.”

On April 17 this year, Prof Muhammad Yunus received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award of the United States, in recognition of his efforts towards combating global poverty.

Earlier on Friday, opposition BNP condemned the recommendations of Grameen Bank Inquiry Commission to bring a change to the legal structure of the bank terming it a plot to destroy the globally acclaimed microcredit organisation.

In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also urged the government to immediately stop maneuvering over the future of the bank of the poor and disadvantaged people, and discard its evil-design to destroy the Nobel Prize-wining organisation
