Mirza Fakhrul and Asaduzzman KhanThe opposition BNP on Tuesday dismissed legitimacy of the new 47-member cabinet, led by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, expressing determination to carry out democratic movement.

However, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal issued a note of warning that the government would not tolerate what he called anarchic movement, reports UNB.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Like the election results, we completely reject the new parliament and the cabinet. We believe this cabinet has no right to rule the country’s 16 crore (160 million) people as people didn’t elect them and approve them.”

“We earlier rejected the election results as people have no relation with it. It can be said people completely boycotted the election and they didn’t accept its results. So making comment on a cabinet formed on the basis of such election results is an absurd matter,” he added.

Fakhrul came up with the remark while talking to reporters after a meeting of BNP senior leaders at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.

He said the ruling party deceived the entire nation and destroyed the liberation war spirit just in a bid to capture power.

Asked what BNP will do now, Fakhrul said as a democratic and liberal party, it will carry out its democratic movement for establishing a democratic and pro-people government.

On Monday, a 47-member cabinet took oath following Awami League’s massive victory in the 11th national election on 30 December.

Meanwhile, the home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, said if BNP tries to unleash any anarchy in the name of movement in the future that will be thwarted at any cost.

“The BNP can wage a movement in the coming days as it’s the democratic right of a political party. However, if they want to unleash anarchy in the name of any movement, it’ll be dealt with an iron hand,” he said while talking to reporters after taking charge as the minister again.

He said the execution of government’s zero-tolerance policy against militancy will be their first challenge. “We haven’t allowed militancy to raise its ugly head and won’t allow so in the future, too.”

He also said they want to maintain zero tolerance against drug abuse. “The menace of drug abuse will be rooted out from society at any cost.”

Asaduzzaman said efforts will be strengthened to curb terrorism from the country. “Our law enforcement agencies are working with efficiency to uproot terrorism. They’re now well-prepared to keep the law order normal facing any challenge,” he said.

He voiced his determination to complete the unfinished works, which he termed as one of his big challenges.
