BNP protests power tariff hike

 

BNP on Friday staged demonstrations across the country protesting the hike in power tariffs.

 

The demonstrations were held in all the cities, district towns and upazila headquarters throughout the country.

 

As part of the countrywide programmes, different thana BNP units brought out processions in the city, according to a Dhaka city unit BNP press release.

 

Pallabi Thana BNP brought out a procession at 4pm.

 

As the procession, led by unit BNP leader and Jobu Dal central committee member Syed Abedin Prince, reached at Purabi Super Market from the Pallabi police camp, police foiled it snatching the banners and attacking the processionists.

 

Processions were also held in Shah Ali, Sher-e Bangla, Adabar, Demra, Shympur, Hazaribagh, Shahbagh and Mohammadpur thanas.

 

On Thursday, the government raised the power tariff by 6.96 percent on average at consumer levels with effect from the billing month of March 1.

 

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Thursday evening.
