BNP observes ‘Nat’l Revolution and Solidarity Day’ Thursday

The main opposition BNP will observe ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ on Thursday, marking the civil-military ‘uprising’ in 1975.

On this day, in 1975, amid political turmoil soldiers and civilians jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment, paving the way for Zia to come to power.

The main opposition BNP has chalked out various programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.

As part of the programme, the party will hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Thursday afternoon.

Besides, BNP will hoist party flag at its central office in the city at 6:00am and the party leaders and activists will place wreaths at the grave of late president Ziaur Rahman at 10:00am. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and its other top leaders will participate in the programme.

BNP’s all the units and associate bodies will also observe the day across the country with due respect.

Meanwhile, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in a message greeted the people of the country on the occasion.

Terming November 7 an outstanding day in national history, she said, “On this day, in 1975, soldiers and civilians took to the streets with a strong vow to protect the national independence and democracy.”

Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, said the hegemonist forces and their local collaborators had killed Ziaur Rahman as he was an obstacle to the path of gaining their interests.

“The hegemonist forces are now trying to grab the whole country by signing secrets deals one after another installing a puppet in state power. In this way, they want to maintain their supremacy by controlling our politics, economy and culture,” she said.

The former premier urged the nationalist forces to get united imbued with the spirit of the day to prevent hegemonist forces for ensuring the basic rights of people and protecting the national independence and sovereignty.

In another message, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also congratulated people on the occasion.

While BNP and its alliances celebrate November 7 as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations consider it as the day of ‘killing of freedom fighters’.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rob) observes it as the day of civil-military revolution.
