BNP leaders accused in 16 cases

 

Leaders and activists of the Hifazat-e Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir and the BNP have been accused in 16 cases of murder, vandalism, arson, damage to property and several other crimes during Sunday’s mayhem in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman on Tuesday said six cases were filed with Motijheel, one with Ramna and nine with Paltan police.

Of the cases, three were lodged for murders.

The police spokesperson said around 40,000 people including 247 named activists of the organisations have been made accused in one of the two murder cases, filed with the Motijheel police.

The other murder case was lodged the Paltan police, he said. The rest of the cases were filed under the Explosives Act and other law.

Those named in almost all the cases, including the three for murders, are Hifazat-e Islam General Secretary Junaid Babu Nagari, its Chittagong chief Mainuddin Ruhi, Joint Secretary General Farid Ullah, Shamsul Alam, Mohammad Mahibullah Babu, Nur Hossain Kashemi, Tazul Islam, Abul Malek Halim, Joint Secretary General Mufti Foyzullah, Joint Convenor Nurul Islam, Abul Hasnat Amini and Mostafa Azad.

Those from the Jamaat are Assistant Secretary General Shafiqul Islam Masud, Hamidur Rahman Azad MP, Dhaka Metropolitan Jamaat chief Mohammad Rafiqul Islam.

Shahe Alam, Ibrahim Bhuiyan, Abdullah Al Mujahid are the accused in the cases from Shibir, the Jamaat’s student front.

Among the 247 BNP leaders named are Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Habibunnabi Sohel, Habibur Rashid, Rafiqul Islam Manju, Azizul Bari Helal, Shafiul Bari Babu and Sarafat Ali Sapu.

Motijheel’s Sub Inspectors Zakir Hossain and Habibur Rahman filed two murder suits. One Mohammad Rezaul Karim filed the other murder suit.

Officials of Dhaka City Corporation (south), Motijheel police, Islami Foundation, National Sports Council, Dhaka’s Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka Traffic, Ansar and VDP, Bangladesh Communist Party (CPB), Jubak and Ramna police filed the 13 other lawsuits.

The cases were filed over the Sunday mayhem caused by Chittagong-based Islamists Hifazat-e Islam while authorities did blame BNP and Jamaat and Shibir supporters for also unleashing violence.

On Sunday, amidst almost a whole day of anarchy and pitched battles with police, at least 14 people had died. Scores of vehicles, shops, makeshift book-shops and the office of CPB were set ablaze. One policeman was hacked to death during clashes.

At least 750 shops were burned. Those shops were mostly owned by small-time businessmen in makeshift stalls.

The mayhem was on amidst a rally of the Hifazat-e Islam in Motijheel.

Later in a late-night drive, police and RAB drove Hifazat supporters from the business district.
