BNP: Hartal, blockade to go on until govt steps down

BNP demanded immediate restoration of internet, telephone and cable lines in the office of Khaleda Zia

Issuing a note of warning, the BNP yesterday said the ongoing hartal and blockade would continue until the present government steps down.

BNP joint Secretary Salahuddin Ahmed in a press release said the ongoing movement would continue till the “illegal” government steps down and free and fair election is held.

The party demanded immediate restoration of internet, telephone and cable lines in the office of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia

“We are requesting people to sacrifice temporarily for the sake of waging movement to oust the Awami League-led government,” Ahmed said.

The countrywide transport blockade has been going on since January 5 which have seen over 40 people killed and hundreds of vehicles vandalised and torched.

Amid the transport blockade, the BNP-led 20-party alliance is enforcing a 72-hour countrywide strike from Sunday.

The SSC and equivalent exams were slated to start from February 2 but due to the hartal the exam was shifted to February 4.

Salauddin from a hideout alleged that Shiekh Hasina’s personal interests in place of democracy is now playing a vital role in the politics of the country.

“Politicised law enforcers have been given license to kill protesters and the prime minister took the responsibility.

Despite concerns of all the developed countries including the rights bodies and United Nations Human Rights Commission, United States, United Kingdom and EU, the government is killing opposition leaders and activists rampantly.”

The BNP leader alleged that government agents are killing people by hurling petrol bombs but the government is putting the blame on the BNP-led 20-party alliance to stigmatise the people’s logical ongoing movement.

He said his party condemned the petrol bomb attacks and demanded arrest and trial of the attackers and at the same time condemned the government evil design to put the blame on the opposition leaders and activists.
