Opposition BNP on Sunday termed rumour and baseless the media reports on the meeting between Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday night.
“The news about the meeting between BNP acting secretary general and Awami League general secretary is baseless and untrue. It’s nothing but a rumour,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Amid the confusion about the meeting as some ministers and BNP senior leader ASM Hannan Shah talked about it, Rizvi came up with the party’s stance about it at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Quoting Hannan Shah, different media reported that he told a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club that Fakhrul and Ashraf had a meeting on Saturday night but unproductive one.
Later, at a party press release Hannan Shah claimed he did not make such comment and he was misquoted.
Earlier, on Saturday night, different electronic and print media ran reports that the two leaders had a secrete meeting at Banani house. Fakhrul, however, said he did not have such a meeting with his ruling party counterpart.
Addressing the briefing, Rizvi said the law enforcers attacked their scheduled rallies at different parts of the country.
The BNP-led 18-party alliance staged demonstrations at all upazila, thana and pourasva headquarters to press home their demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party government.
Rizvi claimed that over 150 opposition leaders and activists were injured as the law enforcers attacked their peaceful rallies. Besides, police arrested more than 130 opposition men.
He alleged that the government is repressing the opposition leaders and activists to implement its blueprint to hold a unilateral election.
The BNP leader warned the government that it will not be able to suppress their movement as they are ready to make any sacrifice to make it a success.
