It demands lifting of rally ban
Condemning the police attack on the opposition leader’s motorcade on Monday night, the main opposition BNP on Tuesday demanded removal of the police official responsible for the ‘unbecoming incident’.
“Police attacked a vehicle of the opposition leader’s private security force while she was returning after visiting ailing BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at the party’s Nayapaltan central office and assaulted her chief security coordinators Col (retd) Majid and security officer Enam Ahmed,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a press conference at BNP chief’s Gulshan office, he also alleged that police carried out the attack without any provocation and smashed the windowpanes of the vehicle and create obstacle to the movement of the motorcade of the opposition leader.
Fakhrul said a responsible police officer (Motijheel zone ADC Mehdi Hasan) was behind the incident.
The law enforcers also arrested BNP student affairs assistant secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, he said.
“We’ve got stunned and aggrieved at the incident and strongly is denouncing it,” the BNP spokesman said.
Urging the government to immediately release Tuku, he said, “We also demanded the removal and punishment of the police official responsible for the incident.”
Fakhrul said the government with such activities is pushing the country towards a dark tunnel and uncertainty. “We want to clearly state that the government won’t be bale to resist the people’s ongoing movement by resorting to killing, forced disappearances, repression and arrest.
He said the action and attitude of the police have given an impression that the government is not sincere about resolving the political crisis through negotiations.
The BNP leader criticised the government for imposing a ban on rallies and public meetings in the city, just a day after the Prime Minister made an offer for compromise in her address to the nation.
He demanded the government lift the ban immediately, paving the path for reaching an understanding to resolve the political deadlock through talks.
Mentioning that BNP is demonstrating the extreme nature of tolerance, Fakhrul said, “It’ll be their mistake if the government takes our flexibility as our weakness. We sincerely want to find out a reasonable solution to the ongoing political crisis through a compromise.”
He also alleged that the party’s Nayapaltan central office has apparently been kept under siege by the law enforcers for the last eight days. “We don’t know what kind of democracy it is.”
