BNP demands power transfer, fresh polls

It also calls for end to extrajudicial killings

BNP has demanded the government transfer its power to a non-party neutral administration as early as possible for holding an acceptable, transparent, free, fair and inclusive national election.

The party made the demand at its standing committee members’ meeting held on Thursday night at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

“The party leaders at the meeting unanimously viewed that the current parliament has no legitimacy as people spontaneously boycotted the January 5 election. This government and parliament are illegal, unconstitutional and unethical,” said a party press release on Friday.

Members of the BNP standing committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, sat in the meeting with party chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair. This was the standing committee’s first meeting since the January 5 election as it last met on November 7.

The BNP policymakers criticised the government for what they said snatching the opposition’s democratic rights to hold public rallies and processions. They said the present illegal administration has turned into a fascist, autocrat and dictatorial government.

They demanded restoration of the opposition’s democratic rights to stage rallies and processions.

The meeting regretted that over 300 opposition leaders and activists have been killed in one month since the 10th parliamentary elections in the hands of ‘fascist’ Awami League government.

The BNP standing committee members alleged that the country has been made a rogue state by destroying democracy, killing opposition leaders and activists, making them disappeared and repressing them.

They also criticised the government for killing the opposition men harassing them by law enforcers in the name of joint forces’ drive.

The BNP policymakers condemned the killings of the members of the 19-party in crossfire by making a so-called drama of gunfight. They strongly demanded the government put end to the extrajudicial killings.

The meeting also condemned the filing of ‘false’ cases against lakhs of people and arrest of opposition leaders and activists. It also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the ‘false’ cases and the release of those arrested.

Mentioning that the country’s people spontaneously boycotted the January 5 ‘farcical and ridiculous’ election involving with the movement under the BNP chief, the BNP standing committee greeted Khaleda Zia for her epoch-making leadership in the movement.

They also thanked the country’s people for what they said spontaneously participating in the movement for the restoration of the caretaker government, and boycotting the January 5 polls.
