BNP demands cancellation of election schedule

It says Baksali boat to sink amid mass resistance

Calling upon the government to shun the suicidal path, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday demanded cancellation of the schedule for the 10th parliamentary polls.

“We again urge the Prime Minister to avoid the suicidal path for the welfare of the country and its people. Take steps to cancel the schedule of the farcical election and accept the demand for a non-party neutral government,” he said.

The BNP leader made the call while addressing press a briefing at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office about the fifth day of the 18-party’s 144-hour blockade programme.

Criticising the government for what he said to turn entire virtually jail and a police state, Nazrul said the all organs of the country has been made puppets of the government.

Issuing a note of warning, the BNP leader said, “We repeatedly said undemocratic and extreme path get inspired when the path of waging a peaceful movement through democratic and constitutional process is not possible. There’s a possibility to disrupt democratic process. If such situation arises, the government will be held responsible for it.”

Demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation to overcome the current political impasses, the BNP leader said, “The ongoing movement has spread to all villages apart from cities and ports. The way the leadership from the grassroots has been flourishing, the ongoing movement wouldn’t be resisted if the all top central leaders are arrested.”

“We want to tell the government that the Baksali boat sailing against strong current of people will sink in the face of a mass resistance,” Nazrul added.

In reply to a question whether it is appropriate to continue programme as dialogue is going on between leaders of two parties, he said, “We’ve announced our programme earlier…meeting is on. It’ll continue until reaching to a settlement.”

“It’s people’s expectation that a path will be opened through the dialogue. But we still have not seen this type of progress through media,” said the BNP standing committee member.

Terming the Election Commission subservient to the government, he urged the EC to cancel the polls schedule. Otherwise, he warned that it have to stand in the dock for their failure to ensure an inclusive election.

He claimed that two people were killed and 715 others injured in clashes with the law enforcers and ruling party men across the country during the fifth day of the blockade programme.

Besides, around 70 opposition leaders and activists were arrested while 1,500 implicated in ‘false’ cases, he added.
