BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday demanded withdrawal of the ‘false’ case filed against its top leaders in connection with Tuesday’s arson attack on a vehicle that left a traffic policeman dead in the city.
Strongly condemning that attack, he said in a statement, “We would like to state unequivocally that the opposition party never believes in the politics of destruction and damage of public life and property. But such pathetic incidents had occurred earlier as well.”
The motive behind the heinous incident carried out on Tuesday when there were no programmes of the 18-party alliance is now clear to the nation, he added. “BNP strongly regretted, condemned and protested such inhumane sabotage of bomb attack and killing,” the BNP leader said.
The BNP spokesperson said they feared that the government adopted the ill-tactics to harass top leaders of the opposition through carrying out such organised sabotage.
The government complicated BNP’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chanra Roy, its joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman, Barkat Ullah Bulu and Salauddin Ahmed, member secretary of BNP Dhaka city unit Abdus Salam, Jubo Dal general secretary Saiful Islam Nirob and many others in the case.
The government complicated the top leaders of the opposition in the case in the same process as it had arrested its central leaders complicating in cases in connection with organised sabotage as part of its ill-attempt to avert the justified demand of the opposition.
Criticising the deployment of the huge law enforcers surrounding Khaleda Zia’s residence and office, Fakhrul said, “Keeping BNP chief’s residence and Gulshan political office cordoned off by law enforcers from Wednesday noon at a time when the opposition leader was taking preparation for exchanging greetings with Christian community on the occasion of the Christmas is indecent and undemocratic.”
Turning to BNP’s December-29 ‘March for Democracy’ towards the capital, he said the programme will be peaceful.
The BNP leader hoped that the government will not create any obstacle to the programme.
