Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday celebrated its 34th founding anniversary across the country taking a fresh vow to realise its demand for restoration of the caretaker government to establish people’s voting right.

On September 1, 1978, General Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with a 19-point programme to build a self-reliant Bangladesh in the process of political transition from military rule following the August 15, 1975 coup.

The observance of the day started with hoisting the national and party flags atop the BNP’s Naylapaltan central offices in the morning. The flags were also hoisted atop all the offices of BNP and its associate organisations across the country.

BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia flanked by several thousand leaders and activists of the party paid homage to party founder slain president Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths and offering fateha at his grave in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 11:30am.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee members, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, vice chairmen Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Abdulllah Al Noman, Selima Rahman, Chairperson’s adviser Shahjahan Omar, Osman Farroque, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman and opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque were, among others, present.

Talking to reporters after placing wreaths at Zia’s grave, Fakhrul said country’s democracy is now at stake. “Today, we’re taking vow that we’ll force the government to arrange the national election under a non-party government to restore democracy.”

A large number of leaders and workers of BNP and its front and associate organisations, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal and Swechchhahasebak Dal, thronged the mazar of Ziaur Rahman and paid rich tributes to the BNP founder.

Earlier on Saturday, BNP arranged a discussion at the Institution of Engineers marking the founding anniversary.

Besides, BNP and its associate bodies marked the day with programmes like discussion, blood donation and book fair.
