BNP blasts cops for remark on handcuffs

BNP Standing Committee Member Rafiqul Islam on Wednesday castigated police for saying that handcuffs can be purchased from open market.
The remark had come from Kushtia’s Additional Superintendent of Police Joynul Abedin after a BNP leader’s handcuffed body was recovered from Kumerkhali in the district on Saturday night
The handcuff bore the police monogram.

The slain leader, Rafiqul Islam Majumder, General Secretary of the BNP’s Ward No. 56 unit of Dhaka, was picked up by some men in black, introducing themselves as members of the Rapid Action Battalion, from his in-laws’ house in Kushtia, Majumder’s family members alleged.

Islam criticised police for the remark as he attended a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club.

“The body of Rafiq was found in handcuffs carrying police monogram. But police is denying that the handcuffs belong to them. (They say) handcuffs can be purchased from market,” said Islam.

“Our question is how handcuffs carrying police monogram can be bought from market? Who is responsible for looking after this?”

The human chain was formed to demand protection for local culture against cultural aggression by the Indian television channels. Jatiyatabadi Sangskritik Andolon had organised the programme.

Islam said programmes aired by the Indian television channels were affecting the local culture, and called for unity of artistes and cultural personalities to stand against the cultural invasion.

He promised to take effective measures to stop the aggression if his party was voted to power in the next parliamentary election.

Islam also criticised the current government for its indulgence in corruption, nepotism and money laundering.
