BNP, allies to start with ‘soft’ agitation

Islami Oikya Jote Chairman Abdul Latif Nejami hinted at the move after a meeting of the alliance at BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Monday night.

The alliance was supposed to finalise its anti-government programmes in this meeting with Khaleda.

After the meeting, Nejami told reporters, “Programmes have been finalised. They will be announced from the BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan at 1pm (Tuesday).”

Asked about the types of the programmes, he said the movement would start with ‘soft, peaceful programmes and they will become tougher gradually’.

Several leaders, who took part in the meeting, separately told bdnews24.com that the first stage of the agitation would last until Aug 30.

Until then, the BNP-led alliance would hold processions and rallies.

From Aug 20 to Aug 30, the alliance leaders will lead mass campaigns to “prepare the grounds for movement”, they said.

The BNP, which boycotted the Jan 5 polls, has been pressing for an early election under a non-party body.

Ruling Awami League leaders have asked the BNP to wait for another five years for the next general election.

BNP chief Khaleda had said new agitation plans would be announced after the Eid-ul-Fitr.

She met her party’s top policymakers on Sunday and reportedly finalised demonstrations plans during Monday’s meeting.
