Bike plying on footpaths to invite punishment: Quader

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said stern actions will be taken against those who will ply motorbikes on footpaths in the capital.

The minister came up with the warning while addressing an inauguration programme of professional skills and awareness training for drivers at the head office of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in the city.

Quader said bus and truck drivers often park their vehicles on both sides of highways, creating huge traffic gridlocks. “Necessary steps will be taken to stop parking of vehicles on highways.”

He also said a terminal will be constructed for parking buses and trucks on highways.

Citing speed-breakers as one of the reasons behind road accidents on highways the minister claimed that the number of accidents on Dhaka-Aricha and Dhaka-Maowa highways have declined after the removal of speed-breakers.

Issuing a warning, the Minister said tender business, transfer business and sharing toll in the communications sector will not be tolerated.
