Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzman Miah on Monday said Italian citizen Cesare Tavella was killed at the order of a ‘big brother’ in exchange of money to mount pressure on the government and portray the country a ‘troubled state’.
‘We are looking for that “big brother”,’ the DMP chief said in a press briefing disclosing the detectives arrested four suspected people in connection with the murder of the Italian origin aid worker.
They also recovered the motorbike the killers used in the murder, he said.
‘It was not a targeted murder… rather it was done to mount pressure on the government. Their goal was to kill a foreigner, preferably white, to create the impression that Bangladesh is not safe for foreigners,’ he said.
Asaduzzaman also categorically ruled out any involvement of religion-based militants or Islamic State group with the killing. ‘The IS drama was staged to cover up the real perpetrators,’ he said.
DMP’s Detective Branch arrested the four men at places in the capital on Sunday, claimed Asaduzzman Miah.
The arrested are – Russell Chowdhury alias Chakti (disk) Russell, Minhajul Abedin Russell alias Bhagne (nephew) Russell alias Kala (black) Russell, Tamjid Ahmed Rubel alias Shooter Rubel, and Sakhawat Hossain alias Sharif.
Police are conducting their drives to recover the gun used in the murder, he said.
Cesare Tavella died after being shot by assailants at Gulshan diplomatic enclave in Dhaka on September 28.
Another foreigner, Hoshi Kunio was also shot dead by assailants near his farmhouse in Rangpur on October 3 apparently in the same manner.
