BGMEA leaders on Saturday claimed that the attack on Standard Group factory in Gazipur was pre-planned and perpetrated by trained goons.

The apparel makers’ trade body made the statement at a press conference on Saturday.

“The culprits set fire to the key spots pointed out in the factory‘s layout plan. They broke the lockers where cash money was kept in and took it,” said Mosharraf Hussain, owner and managing director of Standard Group.

The leaders of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) blamed law enforcement agencies’ failure and the government unwillingness in preventing subversive activities in the readymade garment sector for the fire at Standard Group.

“The government has to ensure sufficient security to run the factory,” said BGMEA president Atiqul Islam.

He demanded the formation of new laws to bring in and book the culprits involved in all past incidents.

He added: “If the government took punitive action against the masterminds behind all incidents there would have no recurrence of such sabotage.”
