BGMEA asked to demolish its building forthwith

BGMEA building

The 15-storey unauthorised BGMEA building stands in the midst of Hatirjheel in the capital as the Appellate Division’s full verdict released Tuesday orders demolition of the structure.

The Appellate Division’s full verdict released Tuesday directed Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association to demolish its unauthorized 15-stoyed building on the edge of Hatirjheel Lake in the capital forthwith.
The apex court directed Rajuk to demolish the BGMEA Complex within 90 days since receiving the copy of the verdict.
In that event, Rajuk was asked to realize the entire demolition cost from BGMEA.
In its observations, the apex court said, the BGMEA constructed its complex illegally in violation of the laws of the land for which it ‘deserves to be demolished at once.’
No bar exists anymore for the demolition of the illegal building that created huge controversies, said rights lawyer Manzill Murshid.
In the verdict, the apex court had upheld the High Court Division’s directive to BGMEA to return money to all who bought commercial space in the BGMEA complex within 12 months.
Supreme Court officials said that copies of the apex court verdict would be sent to BGMEA and RAJUK today.
On June 2, a four judge-bench chaired by Chief Justice SK Sinha rejected BGMEA’s leave to appeal against the High Court order to BGMEA to demolish the building within 90 days.
On April 3, 2011, the HC gave the order to demolish the building.
The apex court said that the BGMEA built the building in violation of Building Construction Act and the environment conservation and the wetland law.
It said that the building was illegally built without Rajuk’s approval.
In 1998, BGMEA began construction of the building on land it did not own.

  1. Is the Govt devoid of common sense ?
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s name plaque still exists at the entrance of Bgmea bldg. How can you allow such insult to the PM if Rajuk tries to hammer down PM’s plaque ?

Heaven has not fallen that the Bgmea bldg is on the Hatirjheel. EPB is to be blamed for selling the land to Bgmea. Do not be mean & let the Bldg stay as it is.
