BDR killing case: HC to hear appeal of lifer Pintu

The High Court will hear the appeal against the trial court verdict sentencing detained BNP leader Nasir Uddin Pintu to life in jail in the country’s largest-ever trial for killing at the Pilkhana headquarters of now-dismantled Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in February 2009.

Upon a plea filed by the lifer, an HC division bench comprising Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq and Justice M Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the order on Tuesday.

It also stayed the operation of the trial court verdict that had awarded Pintu a fine of Tk 5, 00,000.

Besides, the plea for seeking division in the jail is scheduled to  be heard on Wednesday.

On November 5, 2013, a special court (3rd additional metropolitan sessions judge) sentenced 152 people to death, 161 to life term and 256 others to different jail terms and acquitted 277 others in the BDR massacre case.

A total of 74 people, including 57 senior army officers, were killed during the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana in the capital on February 25-26 in 2009.

After the mutiny, the BDR was dismantled and reconstituted as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
