BD a role model for UN development campaign: Xu

Bangladesh has become a role model for the United Nations to be showcased for its excellent development performance and success in poverty alleviation, says a visiting UN official here on Sunday.

 

Haoliang Xu, Assistant Administrator and Director for the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, UNDP came up with the remark during a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the latter’s office.

 

Xu commended the political commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in poverty alleviation, women empowerment and natural disaster risk reduction, said a Foreign Ministry media release.

 

The Foreign Minister highlighted the adverse impacts of climate change on MDG performance, and called upon UNDP to enhance capacity-building support to local communities in coastal areas.

 

“Bangladesh always considers UNDP as a longstanding and trusted partner in realising our national development aspirations,” he said.

 

Mahmood Ali thanked UNDP for its continued development assistance in the areas of poverty alleviation, gender mainstreaming, access to justice, capacity building, the rule of law and human rights.

 

The UNDP Assistant Administrator also met Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque.
