Unidentified miscreants shot dead a ward-level leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Kafrul area in the city Sunday morning, triggering angry protests.

Aggrieved activists of BCL, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, blocked Kazipara-Shewrapara road for about half an hour and vandalised at least 100 vehicles in Mirpur area protesting the killing, witnesses said.

The victim, AK Fazlul Haque Patwari Babu, 23, was the president of ward No. 94 unit of BCL.

Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Kafrul Police Station, said Babu was talking to someone at Itkhola intersection around 11:00am.

Suddenly, two criminals wearing surgical masks and helmets rushed to the spot on a motorcycle, opened fire on Babu and left the spot immediately.

Babu, who was shot four times in the abdomen, was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 11:45am.

While talking to our reporter, the victim’s father, Hedayetullah Patwari, claimed that his son was killed due to a land dispute.

Hearing the news, BCL activists brought out processions and blockaded the Kazipara-Shewrapara road for about half an hour from 1:00pm, demanding immediate arrest of the killers.

Around 150 to 200 agitated BCL activists also vandalised at least 100 vehicles at Mirpur 2, 10, 13 and 14.
