BCL leader beats teenager to death in Hazaribagh

A leader of ruling party’s student body Chhatra League has allegedly beaten a 16-year-old boy to death in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh.

Md Arju, president of Hazaribagh unit Chhatra League, allegedly committed the murder out of suspicion that deceased Raja had stolen his mobile phone and laptop.

Raja was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition around 5pm yesterday where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

The Dhaka Tribune has learned that Arju’s mobile phone and laptop were stolen from his Ganaktuli Lane residence on Sunday night.

Raja’s family alleged that Arju called the boy to his house around 9:30am Monday, locked him up in a room on the ground floor of his three-storied building and gave him a good beating.

Around 3pm, unconscious Raja was taken to his house – also located in Ganaktuli Lane – by Arju.

Hazaribagh police station OC Mainul Islam claimed to have detained three suspects although no lawsuits have been filed in connection with the killing when this report was being filed around 9:30pm.

Arju could not be reached immediately for comments on the allegations brought against him.

Raja’s father Md Babul Hossain is a night guard by profession and is now undergoing treatment for eye problems at the Mitford Hospital in the capital.

A post mortem could not be done because Raja’s dead body was taken to the DMCH after 5pm.

The killing of Raja comes in the middle of a massive countrywide stir centring the recent torture and killing of a number of children in Sylhet, Khulna and Barguna.

Only a day before on Sunday, a group of men from ruling Awami League’s youth front Jubo League severely beat up 40 school children in Chandpur after the authorities of that school refused to entertain Jubo League’s extortion demands.
