BCB director issues apology to Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim

The Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Wednesday (July 26) that they have resolved the matter with its board director Abdul Awal Chowdhury after he apologised for making objectionable remarks on Mushfiqur Rahim.

BCB officials said on July 15 that they will issue a show cause notice to Awal Chowdhury, for his actions after Test captain Mushfiqur drew their attention to the matter.

BCB added that they will seek an explanation from Bangladesh Premier League franchise Barisal Bulls’ owner Abdul Awal, who is also chairman of the BCB women’s wing, as he lambasted Rahim in a TV channel on July 14 as being ill-disciplined and incapable of leading the side.

BCB director and BPL governing council member secretary Ismail Haider told reporters that they decided to end the matter after Mushfiqur took the apology sportingly.

“We understand that it was kind of a misunderstanding as he did not mean to hurt the national Test skipper intentionally,” Ismail told reporters at Mirpur on Wednesday.

“Perhaps he could not put the right word in the right place while expressing his frustration as Barisal Bulls owner and now that he apologised to Mushfiqur and he took it sportingly we want to dissolve the issue,” he said.

The whole issue turned out to be ugly as Rahim seemed to be extremely hurt after his dedication was questioned. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who played for Barisal Bulls during the last edition of the BPL was shocked and the senior cricketers’ active protests prompted the board to take action against Awal immediately.

Awal, who was present beside Ismail during the presser at Mirpur while he was disclosing the latest development in this issue, did not hesitate to apologise to Mushfiqur in public.

“I am sorry [for my action],” Awal told reporters adding “I did not want to hurt him.” Awal took a complete u-turn from the earlier stance where he claimed to the channel during a program that he would not like to keep Mushfiqur as he is not professional and even issued a letter against him to the BPL council.

“Actually I wanted to form the team with Mushfiqur in mind but when I learnt that he is leaving without informing me I was frustrated and maybe that is the reason something like that came out of my tongue,’ he said in an attempt to cool down everything.
