Awami League advisory council member Suranjit Sengupta on Thursday said that finance minister AMA Muhith could not avoid responsibility for the theft of $101 million for the Bangladesh Bank reserve with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
He made the remarks at a prayer session at the city’s Dhakeshwari Temple marking the birth anniversary of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Pointing at the finance minister, Suranjit said, ‘Holding such a position, you have to talk with responsibility. You have to take the responsibility. It’s not your money. It’s not your father money. It’s people’s money,’
He criticised statement of Atiur Rahman, who resigned as Bangladesh Bank governor on Wednesday, for not informing the government about the theft in time.
Had he informed earlier, certainly the stolen money could be recovered, Suranjit said.
On February 5, hackers stole $101 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account with the New York bank and wired it to a number of bank accounts in the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
On February 29, Philippine news portal Inquirer broke the story.
