According to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA), this year purchase orders worth $58 million have been generated from the expo. Out of which $57.3 million was spot orders. Stock lot sales amounted to $1.34 million

Last year’s the show managed to generate purchase orders of $61.7 million, of which $6.02 million was received from spot orders. Stock lot sales figure had stood at $1.42 million.

BGMEA organises the exposition every year to promote apparel products and attract international buyers. The recent disasters like the Tajrin Fashions fire and Rana Plaza collapse, many believe, have apparently attributed to this year’s lacklustre response.

RMG exporters, however, said the disasters have nothing to do with the response. It said this year the expo has been organised in a modest manner to express sympathy with the families of those affected in the incidents.

A statement issued by the trade body has held the current political situations responsible for the poor response.

The 3-day exposition — held between Oct 10 and 12– fetched 5% less order than the previous year.

BGMEA claims the exposition has been ‘a success beyond expectations’ though a less number of buyers visited this year.

Around 80 stall, including 20 by foreign apparel makers were set up at this year’s show. Last year the number was 138.

A total of 136 buyers and their 2,556 representatives from 34 countries attended the show this year as against 159 buyers and 2,846 buyers’ representatives last year.
