Finance Minister AMA Muhith announced the removal of M Aslam Alam on Tuesday evening after a pre-budget meeting in Dhaka.

Before the meeting at NEC auditorium, he said two Deputy Governors, Md Abul Quasem and Nazneen Sultana, had been relieved of their responsibilities.

Earlier at noon, the minister named former finance secretary Fazle Kabir as the new Bangladesh Bank governor following the resignation of Atiur Rahman.

He declined to elaborate on any action against Aslam.

“He was the secretary to this division. That’s why he has been removed,” was the minister’s terse comment.

When bdnews24.com contacted Additional Secretary (Appointment, Posting and Deputation-APD) Subir Kishore Choudhury of the Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday, he pleaded his ignorance of actions against the bank division secretary.

An official of the 1982 BCS batch, Aslam was appointed secretary to the bank division on Nov 5, 2012.

Earlier, he served as secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and director general of the Department Of Land Records and Survey, besides working in the Prime Minister’s Office.

He is scheduled to go on leave preparatory to retirement (LPR) on Jul 30, 2019.
