Banglalink changing name

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose told reporters on Tuesday about the move.

The operator’s Director (Regulatory and Legal Affairs) Zakiul Islam told bdnews24.com the new name would be Banglalink Digital Communications Limited.

But the brand name and other things will remain unchanged.

Bose said the company’s decision was discussed in Tuesday’s meeting of the BTRC and the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

“Banglalink has decided to change its name in its board meeting; we, too, discussed it,” he said.

At present, Banglalink, owned by the Egypt-based Orascom Telecom, has around 27 million subscribers.

In 2004, Orascom Telecom bought 100 percent share in Bangladesh’s Seba Telecom and changed the brand name to Banglalink. The company started anew the following year with its new name.

Orascom, however, is owned by Netherlands-based VimpelCom, the sixth largest mobile-phone operator in the world.
