Bangladesh has over 100,000 accounts with or above Tk 10 million, Muhith says

Bangladesh has more than 100,000 bank accounts with or above Tk 10 million now, the finance minister has told Parliament.

The number of such accounts increased by 36,000 in four years, he said in reply to a question on Monday.

According to him, the scheduled banks operating in Bangladesh have 114,265 such accounts.

The number of such accounts was 78,150 in 2011, 90,655 in 2012 and 98,591 in 2013.

The figure rose to 108,974 in 2014, Muhith said.

He put the number of individual taxpayers at a little over 1.75 million.

Around 300,000 new taxpayers have been added until June this year, he said.

According to the finance minister, the government collected over Tk 208.32 billion in import duty in the first six months of the current fiscal (July-December) against a target of over Tk 220.18 billion.

The collection exceeded the same period last year by over Tk 29.95 billion.

He said foreign loans and aid increased by 6.05 percent in July-December period from the same period last year.

The amount was over $1.5 billion last fiscal year and nearly $1.6 billion this fiscal year.

Until December this fiscal, Bangladesh received $298.83 million foreign aid and over $1.29 billion in loans.

The finance minister said the total operating profit of the banks in the last fiscal year was over Tk 228.44 billion.

State-run BASIC Bank topped the list of commercial banks with losses. It counted losses to the tune of over Tk 2.34 billion last fiscal.

Bangladesh Krishi Bank suffered a loss of over Tk 1.58 billion, ICB Islami Bank Tk 256.2 million and National Bank of Pakistan Tk 4.685 million

Islami Bank gained most profit – over Tk 18.03 billion.

Standard Chartered made second highest profit of Tk 16.5 billion.

Janata Bank topped the list of state-owned banks with most profits. It made Tk 11.526 billion.
