Awami League will join Coco’s funeral prayers: Maya

“The Awami League will participate at the Janaza (funeral prayer) for Arafat Rahman Coco,” Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya told a rally in Dhaka on Sunday.

Coco, who was sentenced to six years in prison for smuggling money, died of a cardiac arrest in Malaysia on Saturday.

The 45-year-old former official of the Bangladesh Cricket Board had been living in Kuala Lumpur since 2011 with his wife and two daughters.

Prime Minister Hasina had gone to the BNP chief’s Gulshan office on Saturday night, but had to return from main gate as it was locked from the inside.

Flanked by veteran ministers, Tofail Ahmed and Amir Hossain Amu, Hasina waited in front of Khaleda’s office for eight minutes before leaving.

BNP leaders said doctors had put Khaleda on sedatives as she was ‘not feeling well’ and no-one was allowed to see her.

“BNP is such a party, which does not value sentiments. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went there as a mother to console another mother who had lost a son.

“But Khaleda Zia did not meet her, which is unfortunate. But still we will go to Coco’s funeral prayers,” said Maya, also the chief of Awami League’s Dhaka city unit.

  1. This charade by Awami League is cruel. They should keep quiet and pray for Koko if they really feel anything. This is nothing but a cruel political move as usual.
